LSHTM’S ground-breaking mission to improve health and health equity has cemented its status as a worldwide leader in achieving excellence in public and global health research.
Our breadth of expertise in the delivery of highly complex projects gave LSHTM the confidence to choose 8build as their construction partner, transforming this land-locked site, where a former milk depot shed once stood, into a bold and sophisticated learning and development facility.

The Project
Our specialist team created a new, best-in-class, office and research facility over six floors with laboratory, meeting and staff facilities including feature curved interview rooms, kitchen and tea-point spaces. An innovative ‘Blue-Roof’ technology water conservation system was installed including carefully designed interfaces with the main façade. Externally, technically challenging, special feature fins bracketed off the structure provides privacy and bespoke ‘folding louvre’ details.
Logistically Challenges
The development sits on a landlocked site located behind the existing LSHTM property, with complicated boundaries with multiple adjacent commercial and residential properties. Community liaison, material delivery and storage and traffic management planning implemented by our site management team reduced the impact the construction works had on the local neighbourhood.
MEP Constraints
The coordination of MEP services into the below ground and basement structural design was a potential challenge due to the riser routes and spacial constraints. To mitigate this, we prioritised MEP procurement whilst carrying out design reviews and adopted the use of 3D co-ordination of riser services and integrated architectural modelling.
Drainage
Drainage routes with structural engineer and propose alternative strategies for wastewater pumping station and crane base methodology became a priority.
It has been a pleasure working with you and the 8build team and we hope to work together on future projects.
