A New Chapter for Dulwich Picture Gallery

We are proud to have delivered the most ambitious transformation at Dulwich Picture Gallery in more than 20 years – a project that reimagines the Gallery as a place where art, nature, and community come together in one of London’s most historic cultural venues.

The redevelopment introduces a striking new timber Children’s Picture Gallery, designed to encourage creative, art-based play, alongside the restoration and extension of the Grade II listed Gallery Cottage*, which now houses a new café, shop, and flexible learning spaces. The Gallery’s three-acre gardens have also been revitalised to create a more open and welcoming environment, while a ground source heat pump system has been installed to support the Gallery’s decarbonisation and long-term sustainability goals.

The project was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Camilla, in a ceremony that celebrated the collaboration, innovation, and craftsmanship behind the transformation. The event was especially meaningful for us at 8build, as it coincided with our 20th anniversary.

The celebrations highlighted both the significance of the Gallery’s mission and the impact its new facilities will have on the local community for years to come.

This achievement has only been possible through the combined expertise of our brilliant partners – Carmody Groarke, Simon Bristow Associates, Structure Workshop, Webb Yates – and the trust placed in us by Dulwich Picture Gallery.

It has been a privilege to play a role in shaping such a significant legacy project – one that embodies our passion for creating spaces where culture, community, and creativity thrive.
