Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice

The Ark, Barnet

Delivering a new build children’s hospice, known as The Ark, situated in the green belt on the edge of a conservation area for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice —  a community-based hospice devoted to providing support for children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families.

Forming the new facility achieved the charity’s noble aim to enhance the number of children they provide care to. Before completion the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice had only been able to provide care to 300 children —  the new facility can now be used by as many as 1,200 children.

The Project

The facility was the first hospice to be built in London in 10 years, and our team was appointed to deliver the new build state-of-the-art facility. The butterfly-shaped building created four distinct wings, providing in-patient facilities, a communal central space, plus office, bereavement suites, therapy and indoor and outside play areas.

Understanding the client’s aspiration of establishing a relationship with the surrounding nature reserve, we provide accessible sensory landscaped gardens stepping down between each of the four wings.

1

Community Engagement

Engaging with our supply chain to turn a £6m project into one that was procured for much less to meet the charity’s aspirations. Through early engagement, bountiful fundraising events, generous donations and lots of goodwill we were successfully able to offer cost savings to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice.

2

Sociable Entrance

The central atrium provides communal space and reception areas, allowing free movement between the main entrance and the conservation area to the rear of the building.

3

Sustainable Building

A bio-solar green roof with 185 PVs helps generate significant amounts of electricity for the building. A surface draining system harvests all rainwater reusing water within a landscape irrigation system.

4

Considerate Logistics

The project was located on the same road as three schools. Our proficient delivery team ensured that we effectively managed deliveries, site personnel and visitors to reduce local congestion during peak school hours. Our off-site storage facility allowed us the flexibility to transport materials to the site and manage stock levels.

It is wonderful that our families’ vision has been realised for a children’s hospice in North London filled with life and light. It’s an iconic building and the perfect environment for children to receive their care and for families to receive support.

The building, construction and property industries have been inspirational in enabling this project to reach completion. It’s rare that such diverse industry bodies work together, but we’re extremely grateful that they’ve enabled us to build The Ark, the children’s hospice London has been crying out for.
